RoRo vs Container: How to Ship Your EV from China

July 5, 2026 2 min read By the ChinaEVExport desk

In short: The two ways to move a car across the ocean — and how to choose for cost, protection and your destination port.

Once you've chosen a car, the next decision is how it travels. There are two main methods, and the right one depends on your route, budget and how many units you're moving.

RoRo (roll-on/roll-off)

Cars are driven onto a dedicated vehicle carrier and secured on deck. It's typically the fastest and most economical option on major routes, and ideal for single units or small batches.

Container

The vehicle is secured inside a container. This adds protection from weather and handling, allows consolidation of parts or multiple units, and suits higher-value models or ports without regular RoRo service.

Lead times

Expect roughly 25–45 days to the Middle East, 30–55 days to Latin America, and 35–55 days to the CIS by sea or rail. We quote the best method for your exact port when you request a landed-cost quote.
