BEV, PHEV or EREV: Choosing the Right Powertrain for Your Market
In short: Charging maturity, driving distances and incentives should decide your powertrain mix. A practical framework.
One of the most important decisions an EV importer makes isn't the brand — it's the powertrain. China exports all three types, and the right choice depends on your market, not fashion.
BEV — pure electric
Lowest running cost, zero fuel. Best where charging exists and incentives are strong: Israel, the UAE, Chile, Colombia. Models like the BYD Atto 3 or Xiaomi SU7.
PHEV — plug-in hybrid
Electric for daily driving, petrol for long trips — around 1,000–1,200 km combined with no range anxiety. Ideal where charging is still developing. Think BYD Qin or Song PLUS DM-i.
EREV — range-extender
Drives as an EV with an on-board generator for long distance, up to ~1,300 km total. Popular for the Gulf and Central Asia — for example the Li Auto L9.
