How much cheaper is RoRo shipping than container shipping for an EV?
Short answer:
RoRo is typically the lower-cost option where a route exists, since the car drives on and off the vessel with no crating; containers cost more but add protection and consolidation.
The cost gap depends on the route, but as a rule:
- RoRo — no crating or loading labor, the vehicle is driven directly onto a car deck; generally the cheaper option and widely available to the Middle East, parts of Latin America and Africa.
- Container (shared or dedicated) — costs more per vehicle but protects against weather and handling damage, allows locking the car and shipping extra parts or accessories inside, and is often the only option to destinations without a direct RoRo service.
