How do I register an imported Chinese EV for road use after it arrives?

Short answer: Registration happens after customs clearance and typically needs cleared import paperwork, a homologation certificate, and local insurance — exact steps vary by country.

Once your EV has cleared customs, local registration generally requires:

  • Cleared customs paperwork — proof duty and VAT are paid.
  • Homologation / type-approval certificate — required in most of our markets (see your country page for the specific agency, e.g. INMETRO in Brazil, NOM in Mexico, SASO/SABER in Saudi Arabia).
  • Roadworthiness inspection — some countries require a physical inspection before plates are issued.
  • Local insurance — required before a plate is issued almost everywhere.

Your customs broker or a local registration agent usually handles the filing; we can put you in touch with contacts we've worked with in several of our markets.
